From the archives: Tommy & Bob Staunton’s on-air punch-up!

A classic clip from BBC Southern Counties, 2006. Bob Staunton first appeared in the slot preceding  TB shortly after our man lamented that none of his colleagues were game for a fued. Staunton was gross. Reactionary, sleazy and cheesy: a caricature of the worst you can get on radio.  A great many older listeners found Staunton preferable to  Tommy.  Like the lady who dials in.

Great to hear that again! Thank you for posting. More please!

I think that was 2004/05 not 2006. Though anyways, this is brilliant radio. Bob/Tommy is a legend…
Oh yeah, with all talk of Murdoch, sky and phone hacking etc, here’s a great Boyd moment…Murdoch “Shut yah mouth, shitface!” puppet call …http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYDsUqMrgHw

    • Tommy Boyd Says:

Alex – Mark the Blog housekeeper here – thanks for reminding me, I’ve put the Murdoch puppet clip on the new Tommy on YouTube page (top right), I don’t think Tommy will mind too much.

That lady who dialed in – if she was a genuine caller – sounded like a typical ‘meddlesome ratbag’ or an old cow who’d persecuted folk for years methinks…however she was set up this time. Well done.

I grew up in a terraced street back in the 70′s that had some old cows, they used to open their front door deliberately to allow my wonderful new ‘harmless non window smashing’ plastic footballs to fall in, then they’d run in cackling with delight. It took some deliberation to get any back, I lost a few forever. God knows what happened to those balls after.

30 years later & I now currently live next door to a mother & middle aged daughter who have morphed into old cows & are currently phoning the council to ‘report me’ at every opportunity. From my Roses are too near their fence, to my gate making a slight rubbing sound etc etc. I’m thinking of setting them up in return, so any ideas please?

No, I wasn’t really intending to stoop down to their level. Such pointless people eventually dig a big hole for themselves anyway.
I think Radio like this is great, most of what we hear now is boring regulated stuff which doesn’t break any boundaries at all, Talksport has also gone boring & whatever people think of his views – even the box office George Galloway now sounds slightly muted on occasion.

I think it’s also odd that James Whale & John Gaunt both went the same year…it’s as if someone is waiting & listening with a quest to remove from radio anyone who is remotely interesting or controversial.

    Hello Tommy,
I have been watching The Tommy Boyd Show 15th July 2008 from play radio on you tube last night and this, fantastic fantastic fantastic. The silence due to an over running fag break put down as technical issues, classic. What is your brand?.
Did you get anywhere with the internet political party? Definently has merits, might have to wait for the economical situation to fully play out & get some “celebs” on board to get into Downing Street, have pondered on this on and off for the last couple of years.
Hope all is well with you and yours. Peace, love and happiness to all.

I remember listening to this live. Absolutely brilliant spellbinding radio. Everything is so safe and dull these days *sigh*, thanks for the memories Tommy, Phil

  6. Lee Says:

So when are you returning to radio, Tommy?

  7. Paul Says:

    Great radio Tommy!

National talk radio presenters are stuffed shirts and seem full of their own self importance.

Where has the fun gone in radio?

Remember you well from your talk radio days, great shows and the supreme wum.

So Tommy Boyd has a punch up with himself
Did he manage to give himself a shiner?

I remember the fight with Mike Dickin during a clash of the titans

Agree though, safe and dull. too many rules, and broadcasters afraid to speak.. feeling like they have to watch what they say

too much fear of causing offense

  9. Kate Says:

I have to say, that Tommy Boyd is top of the class in the Impressionist school. Very gifted.

  10. dave Says:

Tommy Iain Lee is amazing. You are a old age SKUNK PUSSY. Give up old man.

  11. Kate Says:

I think there is a need to tell the truth at the moment, especially about broadcasting.

So, I have to say this..

Tommy Boyd is a talented broadcaster. He does not care about boundaries and I do not believe that was just an act. He was bored with compliance as are many listeners..and he has challenged the bland.Who only believe in the brand. And as I have said he has a staggering talent for impression and interpretation.

BUT if I have to be truthful..It is about balance and to go all BNP on Play Radio was a huge let down..it was not responsible and not intelligent. Had it been handled correctly who knows?

My concluse is that this broadcaster is an important one. BUT if he is a BNP supporter and a racist then he should be forgotten ASAP.
iF HE IS NOT then some have ears?

This is an interesting You Tube video of Tommy talking about a ‘Conspiracy by Default?’…posted on Viktor Huliganov’s channel.
