It’s likely that some politicians, journalists and broadcasters wish to ask if the poor initial police response to the rioting was in part down to the fact they were facing cuts, and some police officers took the view that “If they don’t think they need us let’s see how they get on without us.”
But they are fearful to spit the question out. I’ve heard the point made in pub conversation, doesn’t mean it’s true, but if it involved anybody but the police the issue would join the debate.
It’s called The Elephant In The Room. Not everybody knows the phrase. I once worked for a fullsize lady at the BBC who was trying to rig her ratings using a well known scam. Everybody at the station knew but nobody wanted to challenge her. I whispered to her one day “There’s a big elephant in the room”. A classic clip from BBC Southern Counties, 2006. Bob Staunton first appeared in the slot preceding TB shortly after our man lamented that none of his colleagues were game for a fued. Staunton was gross. Reactionary, sleazy and cheesy: a caricature of the worst you can get on radio. A great many older listeners found Staunton preferable to Tommy. Like the lady who dials in.

Selected & edited by blog mod Mark B. Thanks for Jason at The Shrine, Percy Clapham (where more of the cantankerous Bob Staunton can be found) & AudioClick et al, for hosting original clips.
